Beauvoir On The Beach Script
Christina Hendricks (@clhendricksbc) and Talky Tina (@IamTalkyTina )talk about Simone
de Beauvoir and noir.
Setting: a beach, with noir volcano sand and some birds
C: It’s so great to be back here talking with you on a beach, Talky Tina. Just like we did last time when we did a radio show about shrinking the big questions. Only we were on a different beach then, with different birds. There are lots of ravens here! And there is black sand on this beach...what’s this black sand all about?
TT: Well, I always like to be on the beach with you Christina. You are my Super True Friend! I think this black sand is Noir sand which is a special kind of sand for noir. I chose this spot because of Noir106. Plus, the black noir sand feels nice and hot underneath my feet. And it sparkles!
C: Oh, now I get it. You know, that reminds me of that noir stuff we’ve been doing in ds106 lately. You know, watching the films, reading the stories, listening to the radio shows. There are some things I really like about noir, like the lighting and the shadows, and the smoking and drinking, and the dearth of happy endings. What do you think about Noir?
TT: Well , Super True Friend, I did not think that there were a lot of happy endings in it. But when I look at the words that you just said, I think you made a spelling mistake when you put an 'R' in death. Because then I think you are maybe right, in that noir makes a death to happy endings. Is that what you meant super true friend Christina?
C: Oh, yes, Tina! That is good of you to notice that!
TT: And I do like shows that are in black and white, and with lighting and shadows. Because you can do a lot when you have good shadows. Like hiding. Especially with Ninja skills. I think peoples like noir because it has a special style, all of its own. Just like me!
C: But there are some things that bug me about some of the noir I’ve read or heard or watched, like how the women in many of these stories are either weak victims or, more commonly, evil seductresses. There’s a word for that dangerous, mysterious and often villanous seductress, you know--femme fatale.
You probably already know that; didn’t you play a femme fatale in a tv show once?
TT: Well, Christina, you know that that was just one role that I played one time on one TV show where in the end the man died and it looked like I was the fatal femme who made it happen.
C: Of course, when you did it it was great, because that guy who fell down the stairs was a really nasty piece of business.
