74 EPISODE 9: COMING HOME – PART 1
experiencing the glorious breakfast I have just finished.
Today I’m feeling hopeful, even excited about the prospect of “home”. It’s ironic that from a larger perspective, these days are no different from any other set of days and yet so many small signs of the transition are placed in my path. I haven’t left Ghana but I’m presented with my first coffee in a year. I’ve even shaved my legs. Looking on my smooth and shiny skin, I know I’m shedding more than a little bit (okay, a lot) of hair.
I’m not the only one. I see each of these students, my friends, trying to move back to an old way of thinking. Yesterday, Nicholas told me he was using the words “home” and “mother” only in reference to Belgium. In tacit agreement, none of us use our Ghanaian names at this final gathering.
As unhappy as I was to leave my family early for two days of AFS lectures, I’m grateful now. I have never felt so much a part of the group. Differences between our five countries have melted away into a miraculous unity. Everyone shares my fears, hopes
